The story of Sheaffer began over 100 years ago with a big idea from a visionary thinker. Walter Sheaffer, a skilled jeweler by trade, had an eye for detail and a
mind for invention. In the small back room of his father’s Iowa jewelry store, Sheaffer developed and patented a revolutionary fountain pen that improved the writing experience for pen users across America.

In May 1942, the shortage of basic material for the production of pens, coupled with the patriotic demands of the country, compelled the company to manufacture war material at the former Fort Madison paper mill that Sheaffer had recently acquired and renovated. The Sheaffer Pen Company was presented with its first prestigious Army Navy “E” Award in recognition of its excellent wartime performance.
